Adopt A Golden
-
 The
first step in the process is filling out an Adoption Application.
You can do this online by clicking here.
-
DFWMGRR Goldens are placed in the North Texas area
only
(Dallas, Fort Worth and the surrounding areas).
-
The adoption donation for Goldens 4 years old and under is $300. For dogs 5 and older it is $250.
These donations help us meet the boarding and veterinary
expenses incurred by our nonprofit organization, although our average
expense per Golden is greater than the adoption donation.
- All DFWMGRR Goldens are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
-
We cannot accommodate drop-in visitors to our facility.
Prospective adopters visit DFWMGRR by appointment AFTER their adoption
application has been approved.
- Minimum requirements for adoption include:
- Willing to have the dog in
the house as part of the family;
- Have a fenced
yard for exercise (Override considered for our super seniors);
- A history of responsible pet ownership;
- Are willing to crate
train their dog, if needed;
- All pets in the household are spayed
or neutered;
- Willing to accept a Home Visit as part of the adoption approval
process.
-
On average, it takes between two and six weeks to
adopt a Rescue Golden, depending on your personal circumstances and
flexibility.

We rarely have puppies available. When looking for a puppy, please be very careful!
Do your homework! If you go to a breeder, you will pay a higher fee, but you should be getting
a support system, not just a puppy. Your breeder should care if you are a good home, not just
focus on getting you to purchase their puppy. They should have OFA hip and elbow evaluations
on both parents (verify at www.offa.org). A general vet evaluation is not good enough. X-rays
must be evaluated by an expert after the dog has reached the age of 2. Both parents should
also have an eye exam from a certified ophthalmologist within the past 18 months. If you are looking
at a form rather than a CERF number, the bottom right of the form should say the eyes are clear.
The other clearance both parents should have is a heart clearance. SAS is a heart defect that can
cause early death, even under one year old. You want to know both parents are clear from this
defect. This report must be done by a board certified cardiologist. A breeder should be able to
tell you what problems are in their pedigree - aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins, etc, not just the parents
and grandparents. A hip replacement on a golden can cost up to $5000, so your lower priced puppy
just became a very expensive puppy. Having health clearances isn't a guarantee the problems won't
appear in your puppy, but they do increase the odds of a long term healthy puppy.
One last thing to check on, longevity. Are the dogs in the puppies pedigree living to 11 or 12 or
greater? If not, there may be early deaths due to hereditary tendencies towards cancer.
If you can't afford the high fees of a good breeder, please rescue a dog. We do get a lot of young
dogs, just not very many puppies. If you want to know what energy level and temperament you are getting,
adopting a rescued dog that is full grown may be a great option. Remember also that young puppies
cannot go a full work day without a potty break. If someone isn't home during the day or you can't go
home for lunch, then consider a little older dog. Bringing home a puppy is a lot of fun, but they
need constant supervision, training and probably getting up in the middle of the night initially.
